Most couples are connected to each other by everything from common interests, friendship, tasks such as child-rearing or running a household, all the way to obligation or habit. But these connections do not necessarily equal engagement. Couples enter therapy because their connection begins to fray. Sometimes their relationship becomes a continuous, tense battleground of bickering, argument, and mistrust. Other times a once vibrant connection atrophies into distance and indifference. Regardless of the particulars, these couples, although connected, often begin to operate in a familiar, but hollow survival mode.
In my work with couples, I invite partners to go from merely surviving to thriving; to move from simply connecting to creative engagement.
“For one human being to love another, that is perhaps the most difficult of all tasks...it is the work for which all other work is preparation.” -Rilke
